Data Binding Editor

A visual editor for structured, code-free data binding.

The Data Binding Editor was designed to replace a fragile, code-based workflow for connecting UI components to data sources. Previously, bindings had to be written manually in code an error-prone, non-scalable approach that was inaccessible to most users.

As the product designer on this project, I created a visual interface that allowed users to define complex data bindings, including object paths, expressions, and context conditions without writing a single line of code.

Contributions

  • Abstract conception of a complexity-reducing design system for visual data binding

  • Stakeholder workshop series to validate edge cases and dependencies

  • Deconstruction of system logic and modeling of heterogeneous data structures

  • Wireframing and prototyping in Figma, including state logic and interactions

  • Iterative collaboration with development and ongoing refinement of user stories

  • Validation and user testing with pilot customers

Challenges

The biggest challenge wasn’t visual design, but finding the right level of abstraction: exposing enough complexity to stay flexible, without overwhelming users.

Through iterative prototyping and close collaboration with developers and domain experts, we arrived at a system that translated technical logic into structured, human-readable UI steps.

Impact

The editor was rolled out as a core product feature and became the new standard for data binding. It significantly reduced setup errors, improved onboarding, and empowered teams to create advanced configurations independently - bridging the gap between no-code usability and system-level precision.
